U2 Brief History
U2 are one of the biggest selling bands of all time. With over 12 studio recorded hit albums to their name – selling more than 145 million albums, they have a real claim to be one of the most important bands of the last few decades. A claim bolstered by the fact that they have won more Grammy Awards (22) then any other band throughout history.
Their success have been many. In 2005 U2 were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame, whilst Rolling Stone paid tribute to their importance by listing them as number 22 in the list of the '100 greatest artists of all time'.
Charity work
The band aren't just famous for their music though. Led by world famous front man 'Bono' the band have been instrumental in numerous charity works and performances. Thye have doen so together as a band and as individuals.
The list of human rights and social justice causes they have been associated with is huge, including some of the biggest charity events ever to happen. From 1984, when band members Bono and Adam Clayton participated in the original Band Aid, they have been constant charity crusaders.
Notable events include 'War Child' – in which Bono and Edge performed and 'A Conspiracy of Hope' – where U2 performed in aid of Amnesty International. On top of concert appearences other noteable actions include Bono setting up 'Product Red', a for-profit brand raising money for the Global Fund and Edge working with 'Music Rising' to help musicians who suffered through Hurricane Katrina.
U2 Now
The band still have the original members performing, the same crew as formed the band in Dublin, Ireland, in 1976. Those members are Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jnr.
They are currently embarking on a 14 city European tour – 'The 360 Tour', which is winning rave reviews for both the music and the showmanship, including some awe inspiring stages. This remarkable band show no sign of slowing down.
