New England Patriots Brief History

The New England Patriots or the “Pats” is an American Football team of Greater Boston that was established in 1959. The team is part of the East division of the AFC in the NFL. The team used the name Boston Patriots from 1960 to 1970 and changed it to Bay State Patriots for a month in the year 1971. After which, they all agreed to officially change their name to New England Patriots. This is what they have been using from 1971 up to the present.

It was in November 16, 1959 when Boston business executive Billy Sullivan was awarded the 8th and the final franchise in the AFL. During that time, the team struggled so much because they do not have a regular home stadium. They play in four different stadiums but they don’t own any one of them. The Patriots had played in only one AFL championship but had lost the game to San Diego Chargers. After that, they did not play in any AFL or NFL game for 13 years.

During the merging of the AFL and the NFL in 1970, the Patriots team was placed in the AFC East division. Following that year, the team moved to their new home in Foxborough, Massachusetts. It remained as their home for the next 30 years. The Foxborough Stadium served as their home stadium from 1971 to 2001. Then, they transferred to the Gillette Stadium in 2002 and have been using it up to the present time. The official colors of the New England Patriots are nautical blue, new century silver, red, and white. It was Phil Bissell, who is a Boston Globe artist, who designed their official logo.

After team struggles and hardships, success came their way when they won several championships in the league. They won three Super Bowl championships in the years 2001(XXXVI), 2003(XXXVIII), and 2004(XXXIX). They also won 6 AFC and 11 Division championships.
