Pittsburgh Steelers Brief History

The Pittsburgh Steelers was established in 1933 as the official professional football team of Pennsylvania. The team is a member of the North Division of the AFC in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers home field is the Heinz Field.

The Steelers was previously known as the Pittsburgh Pirates. Their first field game happened in September 1933 and they were up against New York Giants at that time. They lost to their opponent in a not so impressive 23-2 score. At the start of the team’s career, Pittsburgh does not have a good field record at all. They never finished anything higher than second place in their division. It was only in 1938 that the team made history. This is following the team owner’s decision to sign up Byron White, whom at that time, has the biggest contract in the history of NFL. Byron White played for the team for only a year. But that was enough to give all the other players the will and the strong resolve to fight and win. During the 1940’s, the team was renamed to Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers experienced player shortage during World War II. They even merged twice with the other teams to compensate. It was in the 1943 season when they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles to form the team called the “Steagles”. They ended up with a 5-4-1 card. The following year, they merged with the Chicago Cardinals to form the team named Card-Pitt. Sarcastically though, they are referred to as the “Carpets”. Unfortunately, this team ended up a 0-10 scorecard that made them the only winless franchise in the NFL history.

When the big drought has ended in 1947, the Steelers made it through their first playoff game. The next years ahead became a long history of wins and victories for the team. They have won several championships which include six Super Bowls, seven conference championships, nineteen division championships, and at a total of twenty-five playoff appearances.
