San Diego Chargers Brief History
The San Diego Chargers is just one of the several all-professional football teams based in California. The team was established in 1960 and is currently part of the Western Division of the AFC in the NFL. The Chargers started as a charter member of the American Football League. During their first season, they played in Los Angeles. In 1961, they moved to San Diego, where their official home field became the Qualcomm Stadium. The team has won one AFL title in 1963 and some playoff series before joining the NFL in 1970.
The team’s early victories in the AFL were due to the playing prowess of then outstanding wide receiver Lance Alworth. He holds the record of having 543 receptions for 10,266 yards in all of his 11 years as a pro player in the AFL-NFL.
The Chargers’ coach for ten long years is Sid Gillman. He is considered to be the authority in the forward passing offense strategy during his time. This was proven when they won their first title in 1963, together with his best players such as Alworth, Hadl, Lincoln, and Lowe. The team scored 51-10 over the Boston Patriots. The team has one league championship, one conference title, and 14 division championships under their belt.
The San Diego Chargers uses only one logo design and style all throughout their playing career. They just changed their colors. Their logo is a shaped like a shield with a horse head. It also got a lightning bolt and the word “Chargers” on it. From 1960 to 1973, the color of their jersey is electric blue although they sometimes they use the white version. On both jerseys, a gold lightning bolt is printed on the shoulders. The Chargers’ helmet is white and it bears the player’s number. It was only in 1974 when they changed their color from electric blue to dark royal blue. The helmet’s color changed as well and the numbers were removed. Nowadays, the San Diego Chargers officially uses the colors navy blue, gold, white, and powder blue.
