New Orleans Saints Brief History
The New Orleans Saints was established in the year 1967 as an expansion team. The team is composed of all-professional American football players from Louisiana. They are part of the South Division of the NFC in the NFL. The headquarters of the New Orleans Saints is located in Metairie. The Saints’ home stadium is the Louisiana Superdome. They have played in there since 1975 up until now. Previously, they were housed at the Tulane Stadium, from 1967 to 1974. However, when Hurricane Katrina hit, the team was forced to use three temporary stadiums for their games. These are the Tiger Stadium, Alamodome, and the Giants Stadium.
The New Orleans Saints was created through a backroom deal between Congressman Hale Boggs and NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle. The NFL needs congressional approval for the merging of the AFL and the NFL. To seal the deal, Rozelle went to New Orleans and announced that the NFL committee has awarded the city with a new franchise. This announcement was done on November 1, 1966. To return the favor, Congressman Boggs signed the NFL merger.
The Saints’ team name actually came from the famous song “When the Saints Go Marching In”. A young oilman from Houston, John W. Mecom Jr., is the first major stockholder of the team while the famous trumpeter from New Orleans Al Hirt is part owner. Hirt rendered the song “When the Saints Go Marching In” at one occasion and it was adapted to be the fight song of the team.
The New Orleans Saints won several championships. They have won three Division championships from NFC West and NFC South. They also have six playoff appearances in the NFL. The New Orleans Saints logo is the same one used since1967. It depicts a fleur-de-lis that matches the color of their uniform, which are black, old gold, and white.
