During the time that Auerbach was the coach, he brought the Boston Celtics to a seven-streak championship win. In six out of these seven games, the Boston Celtics was head-to-head with the Lakers. This started the bitter rivalry between the two teams.

Just after the 1966 championship, Auerbach resigned as head coach and became the team’s general manager. The African-American player Bill Russell took over his place as head coach. He was the first African-American coach in the NBA.
