Charlotte Bobcats Brief History

The Charlotte Bobcats originated from Charlotte, North Carolina. This team is a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the NBA. The Charlotte Bobcats was established in 2004 as an expansion team. This happened after two seasons when Charlotte Hornets relocated to New Orleans to become the New Orleans Hornets. The home court of the Charlotte Bobcats is the Time Warner Cable Arena, which is located in uptown Charlotte.

The first team owner of the Bobcats is Robert Johnson, who is also the founder of Black Entertainment Televisions. It was in June 2006 when he announced that former player, NBA legend, and North Carolina native Michael Jordan is the second largest shareholder of the Bobcats. Jordan had chosen to become part of the teams’ basketball operations. Currently, the team is owned by Jordan and co-owned by rapper Nelly.

The Charlotte Regional Sports Commission put up a contest named “Help Name the Team” to give Charlotte’s new team a fitting nickname. The contest drew about 1,250 suggestions. The winning name for the team is the bobcat, which refers to the cats of the wildlife that are athletic and fierce. They are indigenous predators mostly found in the Carolinas.

The Charlotte Bobcats first official logo is an orange bobcat head inside a blue silver basketball. This logo was changed in 2008 to an orange and blue bobcat head with a silver streak on the basketball at the right corner. The official jersey colors of the team are orange, blue, white, black, and silver.

The Charlotte Bobcats drafted talented youngsters from different universities to start a young and promising team. They also went out to sign players veteran players like Gerald Wallace, who used to play forward for the Sacramento Kings, to lead the new players. Omeka Okafor, who was named as the 2005 Rookie of the Year, was obtained as well. The team drafted two North Carolina players, Raymond Felton and Sean May. The Charlotte Bobcats hopes to have a good start in the NBA.
