Miami Heat Brief History
The Heats are the official basketball team of Miami, Florida. Their current home court is the American Airlines Arena. The team is a member of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference of the NBA. The Miami Heat was established in 1988 and initially played as an expansion team of the NBA.
On their debut season, they have lost their first 17 games, finishing the season with a 15-67 win-loss record. During the 1989 NBA draft, the team picked Glen Rice on the fourth round. Glen Rice led the team to their first playoff appearance in 1992.
In the early 90’s, Miami Heat team hired Coach Pat Riley. He is behind the deal that released Glen Rice in exchange for Alonzo Mourning. The following year, the team signed up Tim Hardaway. That signaled start of Heat’s success. They have posted a franchise record of six straight playoff appearances right after the trade. Eventually, they won four division titles.
During the early 2000’s, the team was down to only a sub-40 win. They participated in the NBA drafts to rebuild the team. In 2003, they picked Dwayne Wade and paired him with Shaquille O’Neal. That tandem, together with Coach Pat Riley leadership and the efforts of the whole team, managed to obtain three division titles and the elusive 2006 NBA championships.
But on the next season, the team failed to defend their title. This is due to some trades, free agent signings, and injuries. In 2007, O’Neal was traded to another team. Riley was retiring and Wade underwent several surgeries. That season is one of their worst in their history with the NBA.
The team’s official jersey colors are black, red, white, and orange. They are the only team in the NBA with an NBA logo printed on the right shoulder instead of the left side. The team forbids the use of headbands during their games.
