Dallas Mavericks Brief History

The Dallas Mavericks, also known as the Mavs, are the currently a member of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference in the NBA. The team was established in 1980 when businessman Don Carter and his partner Norm Sonju requested an NBA franchise for Dallas Texas. The last professional basketball team in Dallas was the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association. But then, they have moved to San Antonio in 1973 to become the San Antonio Spurs. The name Maverick came from a 1957-1962 western comedy TV show series of the same title.

The debut game of the Dallas Mavericks took place at the newly constructed Reunion Arena. That game was with the San Antonio Spurs, which they beat with a 103-92 score in regulation. However, after that victory, the team had delivered a discouraging season record of 6-40 and finished it to 15-67 win-loss record.

But then, the losing streak of the team failed to discourage the players. They continued to look forward and try different strategies for the next seasons. The Mavs got their first Conference title in 2006. They also have won two division titles, one in 1987 and another in 2007. The first finals appearance of the team happened in 2006 against the Miami Heat. They defeated the Phoenix Suns in Game Six of the Western Conference Finals. However, they failed to bag the titled even with the home court advantage.

The official road uniform of the Dallas Mavericks is royal blue with white and silver trimmings. Their home uniform is the opposite, which is white with midnight blue and silver trimmings. In the 2004 and 2005 seasons, the team introduced a green set of uniform, which is much similar to the ones they used in the 80’s. This is designed by the famous rapper Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. It featured the word “Mavs” in the front side of the jersey in a blue trim.
