Minnesota Timberwolves Brief History
The Minnesota Timberwolves is an all-professional basketball team based in Minneapolis. The team is a member of the Western Conference in the Northwest Division of the NBA. The Timberwolves was founded in 1989 as an expansion team. The team’s current home court is the Target Center arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The name Timberwolves was a result of a “Name that Team” contest. The Timberwolves lost their debut game against the Seattle SuperSonics in a 106-94 score. But they have beaten the Philadelphia 76ers, which marked their first home game win. During their first season, they gained a 22-60 record and had finished 6th in the Midwest Division.
During the 1995 season, Timberwolves had selected Kevin Garnett on the draft. Flip Saunders acted as their new coach. That same year, Laettner and Rooks were traded for Andrew Lang and Spud Webb. They also traded their first round pick Donyell Marshall to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for forward Tom Gugliotta.
These trades made way for rookie Kevin Garnett to be the go-to player inside. The team had finished 5th place in the Midwest Division. On the following year, they swapped Ray Allen to Milwaukee Bucks for Stephon Marbury in the 4th pick of the NBA draft. The addition of Marbury on the team has a positive affect. Also, Gugliotta and Garnett became the first players from Timberwolves to appear on the All-Star team.
The tandem of Garnett and Gugliotta led the team’s scoring that granted them their first playoffs appearance. Unfortunately, the team made a quick exit in the postseason because of a sweep by the Houston Rockets.
In 1997, the team decided to change their official team logo and its color. They added black and used the growling wolf that looms over the trees as their logo. The team is continuously adding new names on their roster.
