San Antonio Spurs Brief History
The San Antonio Spurs came from Texas. They are currently members of the Western Conference of the Southeast Division in the NBA. The team was established in 1967 and they joined the NBA in 1976.
The San Antonio Spurs is one of the four teams of the ABA that were made intact in the NBA. The merge happened in 1976. The three other teams that gained entry to the NBA along with the Spurs are the Nets, Pacers, and Nuggets. The San Antonio Spurs is the only team from ABA that has won four NBA championships.
The team was first known as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967. Then they changed their name to Texas Chaparrals in 1970. It was only in 1973 that they used the name San Antonio Spurs. It has become their official name up to the present. Currently, the team’s home court is the AT&T Center in San Antonio Texas.
The Chaparrals were one of the 11 teams on the floor during the ABA upstart inaugural season. On their second season in the ABA, Dallas finished 4th place with a record of 41-37. However, they had suffered poor attendance on their home games.
The team has already played in 33 NBA seasons since their debut in 1976. They are one of the teams in the NBA who has four championship rings on their name. The Spurs has 17 division titles and four conference titles. The team made it 19 playoff games in 20 seasons. When Tim Duncan was drafted in 1997, the Spurs have not missed the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons.
Duncan was named First Team All-NBA and Rookie of the Year, with average points of 21.1 and 11.9 rebounds in a single game. The 2003 season is one of the most memorable times for the team. It was also when David Robinson had announced that it is going to be his last season. His efforts, together with Duncan’s and the whole team, managed to obtain the elusive NBA championship title for that year.
